Terms of Service
The terms that apply when you use Quire during the free, invite-only beta.
Draft — not yet reviewed by counsel. These terms describe how Quire works during the invite-only beta. They are not final and will be revised before general availability. Items marked [TODO] must be completed before launch.
Agreement
These terms are an agreement between you and [TODO: legal entity name] ("Quire", "we", "us"). By creating an account or using Quire, you agree to them, to the Acceptable Use Policy, and to the Copyright and Takedown Policy. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information.
You must be at least [TODO: minimum age] to use Quire.
The beta
Quire is offered as a free, invite-only beta. That means:
- Access is by invitation, and we may limit how many people join.
- Features may change, break, or be removed without notice.
- We set daily limits on Quill messages and study sets per user, and may change them during the beta.
- We may pause or end the beta, or your access to it. We will try to give notice before ending the beta.
There is no charge for the beta. If we introduce paid plans later, we will tell you before anything changes, and you will never be charged without agreeing to it first.
Your account
You are responsible for activity on your account and for keeping your sign-in details safe. Use accurate information, keep one account per person, and tell us at [TODO: support@quire.example] if you think someone else has access to it.
Bring your own copy
Quire does not sell, lend, or distribute books. Every member who reads in a room owns a copy of the book. One member uploads a PDF; other members who own the book can confirm that they do and read the room's copy instead of uploading their own.
- Only upload copies you own or have the right to use, such as a PDF you bought or one whose license permits this use.
- An uploaded copy is shared only inside its room, and only with members who confirm they own the book. People outside the room cannot open it.
- Only confirm ownership of books you own. Confirming ownership you do not have breaks these terms, and we may remove your access to the room.
- Do not use rooms to give books to people who do not have them. Sharing short quotes in highlights and discussion is fine; posting large portions of a book is not.
See the Copyright and Takedown Policy for how we handle infringement claims.
Your content
You keep ownership of everything you upload and write, including your copies, highlights, notes, and messages ("your content").
You give us a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free permission to host, copy, process, and display your content only as needed to run Quire for you and for the rooms you share it with. This includes sending passages to our AI and search providers to answer your questions, as described in the Privacy Policy. We do not use your content to train AI models. The permission ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies in backups, which expire on their normal schedule.
You are responsible for your content and confirm that you have the rights needed to upload it.
Rooms
Rooms are private and joined by invite link, with up to 25 members. Anyone with a valid invite link can join, so share links only with people you trust. Room owners can revoke invite links. Content you post in a room is visible to its members.
Quill
Quill is an AI assistant. Its answers are generated automatically and can be wrong, incomplete, or misleading. Check the cited passages before relying on an answer, and do not use Quill as a substitute for professional advice.
Quill answers only up to your reading position, but spoiler protection depends on positions being set correctly and may not be perfect.
Acceptable use
Follow the Acceptable Use Policy. We may remove content or suspend accounts that break it.
Ending your use
You can stop using Quire at any time and ask us to delete your account. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms, if required by law, or if we end the beta. Sections that by their nature should survive (such as ownership, disclaimers, and limits of liability) continue after your access ends.
Disclaimers
The beta is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. We do not promise that Quire will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that content will never be lost. Keep your own copies of anything important.
Limitation of liability
[TODO: limitation of liability clause, to be drafted by counsel.]
Governing law and disputes
[TODO: governing law, venue, and dispute resolution, to be drafted by counsel.]
Changes
We will update these terms as Quire changes and change the date at the top of this page. If a change is material, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use Quire after that means you accept the updated terms.
